The Shawki Saad PhD Scholarship is a prestigious and fully funded program specifically designed to support students from Sub-Saharan Africa who hold a Bachelor’s degree. Applicants must be applying to study for a PhD at Imperial College London and meet the requirements for a PhD degree at the college.

This scholarship program was established in honor of the late Professor Shawki Saad, whose generous endowment gift made it possible. The program aims to award one scholarship each year from 2023 to 2026.

The scholarship was announced alongside a student prize for sustainability-related research in Sub-Saharan Africa, reflecting the College’s commitment to addressing global systemic challenges in engineering and sustainability.
This scholarship is fully funded, covering all overseas tuition fees for three years. In addition, it provides a maintenance stipend at the UKRI London rate (£20,622) for 3.5 years, as well as travel costs, including flight and visa expenses.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must be ordinarily resident in Sub-Saharan Africa.
- A First Class Degree (or its international equivalent) in engineering or another numerate discipline.
- A Master’s level degree with distinction.
Note: This scholarship is not available to continuing students.

- Apply for a Civil and Environmental Engineering Research (PhD) Degree.
- Discuss scholarship options with their supervisor to be nominated for this award.
- Find a PhD supervisor by exploring research topics and potential supervisors on the college website.
- Contact preferred supervisors directly to discuss projects and funding opportunities.
- Submit the Ph.D. application for admission through the Registry online admissions system after receiving sufficient interest from an academic supervisor.
- All scholarship applications must be supported by an academic supervisor.
